Radio-frequency identification(RFID)

Radio-frequency identification (RFID)  is an automatic identification technology, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders.

The RFID tags contain with integrated circuit for storing and processing information, modulating and demodulating a (RF) signal, and other specialized function; Antenna is incorporated for receiving and transmitting the signal. Both Activeas well as Passive RFID tags can be embedded into product for the purpose of identification using radio waves.

Active RFID Solution
In case of an Active tag, an internal power source is used to power the integrated circuits, which broadcasts the tag’s unique ID to all sensors/receivers that are listening on the specified frequency. Communications from active tags to readers is typically much more reliable than from passive tag. Active tags, due to their on board power supply, can be read from several meters away and beyond the line of sight of the reader.

 Aeroscout Visibility RFID System

The Aeroscout Visibility System is the industry’s leading Wi-Fi based Active RFID platform, delivering real-time location (RTLS), long range Active RFID, choke-point visibility and telemetry all in a single integrated cost-effective infrastructure. Aeroscout solutions use standard Wi-Fi wireless networks to accurately locate and identify any asset or person, and utilize that location to deliver direct business benefits with a fast return on investment. Passive RFID Solution
Passive RFID Tags have no internal power supply. The minute electrical current induced in the antenna by the incoming radio frequency signal provides just enough power for the CMOS integrated circuit in the tag to power up and transmit a response. Most passive tags signal by backscattering the carrier wave from the reader. This means that the antenna has to be designed both to collect power from the incoming signal and also to transmit the outbound backscatter signal. The response of a passive RFID tag is not necessarily just an ID number; the tag chip can contain non-volatile, possibly writable EEPROM for storing data.

Today, the Passive RFID is applied in enterprise's Inventory Control Management, Transportation & Logistic, Smart Counter Management, Document Tracking, Warehouse Management, Fix Asset Management, Work in Progress and Access Control Management etc. to improve the efficiency of inventory tracking and management.

 1. Access Control

The RFID solution for access control can be implemented in many environments that required location tracking, access control and identification features, such as clubhouse, school campus, hospitals or medical care centers and prisons.

The RFID access control system enhances real-time safety and security. When the visitor or vehicle enters or leaves the controlled area, RFID tag would release the unique personal identification signal to the sensor at the security points for permit the issuance process. Visitor and vehicle information that has been registered in the system will be associated with the permit when security officer issue to the visitor. Antenna will be installed at selected locations to validate the access right of visitor and vehicle. Then, visual or audio status will be provided in corresponding locations to verify the status when visitor and vehicle passing the security control point. Thus, special attention could also be made to monitor unsupervised to avoid thefts as well.

The system also improves the daily operation effectiveness of the enterprise. Multiple entries can be recorded instantly and visitors no longer need to stop at the checkpoints for ID verification. The information can be shared amongst different checkpoints though the data communication within the centralized database.

2. Document Tracking

Document tracking is an important process to ensure efficient management in an organization with reduced efforts to locate documents and also prevent the lost of documents. RFID is one of today’s most rapidly growing technologies combining high levels of security and efficient tracking capabilities. It provides new and valuable productivity opportunities for enterprises.

The implementation of RFID in organizations for document trackingimproves productivity and efficiency among the enterprise, as batches of documents (nearly 1,000 tags per second) at a fixed location can be tracked simultaneously. RFID can also detect and identify documents that are misplaced or leave the controlled area. This enhances security and administration of the documents. All that required a hand-held reader or shelves reader that can be moved rapidly across a group of documents. The RFID system is especially ideal for applying in the Library, which RFID reader captures library user’s borrowing habits and such information can be used to forecast in acquisition of new books. The system also saves operation cost by the automated borrowing process at the borrowing stations.

The RFID Document Tracking System can also be applied in Law Firm, Hospital etc. in which actual location of documents, document movement status is important for the business’s daily operation. Security could be enhanced data accuracy and misplaced of documents would be alerted to administrator.

3. Fix Asset Tracking

In today’s competitive environment, companies need automated systems that can help provide accurate, real-time information about the location and status of their assets, in order to operate efficiently and effectively safeguard against operational risks.

In the fixed RFID asset tracking system, tags are permanently attached to capital equipment and fixed assets including pallets, cylinders, lift trucks, tools, vehicles, trailers and equipments etc. Assets are read by fixed position readers placed at strategic points within the facility or by handheld terminals. The right tracking system can automatically track the movement and location of tagged assets with totally accuracy, that consistently deliver a return on investment (ROI)  in the short-term, and serves as a launch pad for more comprehensive RFID deployments within a company.

The system eliminates costly and time-consuming manual description checks while at the same time decrease the probability of human error normally inherent in the manual audit process.

In warehouse and shipping functions, Active RFID tags or label on pallets, cylinders, and other shipping containers can be automatically building a record of what specific shipping containers were sent to each customer. The information can be used to document cycle times, improve returns and recoveries, and aid in disputes with customers about lost or damaged assets.

4. Jewelry Inventory Control

The RFID inventory-tracking solution in Jewelry industry is designed to monitor the movement of each piece of jewelry at a real-time and cost saving basis. The system improves the reliability of asset reliability for stock. Once the RFID tag is applied to a piece of jewelry, store worker can use a handheld reader to capture the tag’s unique identification number, then again on a daily basis for inventory management. The data related to those daily reads is transferred to an inventory database that contains detailed information on each piece of jewelry.

The RFID technology ensures jewelries that carry with RFID tags to be read and captured simultaneously. As a result, the location of every diamonds, stones that had entered the store can be tracked, and as it is processed, displayed or sold. The diamonds move faster can then be observed instantly. There are currently two types of RFID reader / terminal which are specialized for Jewelry tracking implementation:

5. Logistic Automation

RFID is a strategic solution for logistics, allowing wireless transmission of information for production identification. The technology delivers advantages to the logistics industry, including traceability of assets within the supply chain, optimum order management and improved product availability.

Logistic RFID systems can be used for numerous applications in production, logistics and distribution. The RFID tagged containers, boxes and carries, work piece carries and tools in assembly lines, airports and automobile production, and for access control to company property and parking facilities. Identification though RFID tags helps reduce warehousing costs and error rates in the supply chain. The tags contain memory and readers extract the data stored on the tag. If a tag is attached on a product, store on it a product code, which is a unique product identifier, the asset can then be tracked giving visibility and reduced shrinkage or loss.

The implementation of RFID in logistics reduces costs and wastage as the increased visibility of products through the supply chain helps reduce shrinkage and errors. Saving can be achieved from the removal of manual processes due to automated scanning of assets, rather than the manual scanning of barcodes.

 6. Smart Counter System

With the uprising standard of living in the modern century, consumption behavior was transformed to highlight on the enjoyment of ease and comfort along the shopping process. In order to grasp with higher revenue from the drastic competition in the market, enterprises have to think of new strategies in order to strike from success. RFID Smart Counter System is an option to strengthen Customer Loyalty and Customer Relation Management (CRM) to the enterprises.

The idea of RFID Smart Counter System is that each items is offered with an near field RFID tags, while a specific product code is issued to that particular item on the tag. Product information such as price, picture, expiry date, ingredient and video at the database would be extracted automatically to the computer system or kiosk at the field when the RFID reader detect the product code released from a item selected by the customer.

Another way is to integrating RFID readers while items are put onto the reading to keep track of the location of inventory. Once the customer picks up one item, video related to that particular product would be showing on the screen. This would facilitate the promotion tactic at the store and customer is satisfied by higher information acknowledgement.

7. Automatic Warehouse

The importance of Warehouse Management System (WMS) for an enterprise is to ensure real-time inventory visibility that avoid loss due to inventory overdose or delay in stock-replenishment because of shortage in stock. In warehouses around the world, many employees still manually record receiving, picking, packing and shipping activities that are time and cost consuming.

RFID serves as the automated identification system that provides many enterprises with warehouse operations a promising alternative for improving inventory throughout and accuracy, as well as enabling cost saving, in terms of identifying and locating inventory, or to ensure that goods arrive where they are supposed to go when they are supposed to be there-or both-some kind of automated identification system is generally warranted.

Compare to using barcode system, RFID gaining real-time visibility of stock, increasing information accuracy, yet totally reduce the cost of manual scanning and tracking process. RFID enabling higher read rate that several cartons can be read simultaneously. It enables the enterprise to attain a high return-on-investment (ROI) in terms of the operation cost of manual stocktaking and data capturing. The RFID system possesses high read rate (1,000 tags / sec) and the RFID tags are rewritable, that means they are less easy to be imitated compare to barcode. More, the RFID signal is capable to penetrate water or tissue without barrier.

System Applications

Several active or passive tags are designed for various applications in the warehouse. It is common to affix the cartons to an RFID label that is encoded with a unique ID and links to the Electronic Product Code (EPC). Once a pallet of cartons is assembled, a portal RFID interrogator automatically reads the EPC encoded to the pallet tag and sends it to the company’s warehouse management system (WMS).

8. Work in Progress Management

More and more of the business using RFID to improve the cost, safety and reliability of managing Work in Progress (WIP) management, that turns out with a higher Return on Investment (ROI).

RFID’s key contribution to improving WIP is that it can provide real-time visibility. Enterprise can identify the condition, quantity, movement and movement history of anything without necessary having line of sight. What that does is allow a much more streamlined automated process. It can be applied in the production process that the leveraged of RFID to ensure the set up of machinery correctly, to avoid costly mistakes. RFID can also cut errors by making use boxes have the right products in them before shipment. The company integrated with RFID to gain visibility into its distribution operations-and that reduced errors in order shipments to customers.

Manufacturers can analyze their processes segment-by-segment to ensure that the right parts are delivered at the right time to the right assembly point, cutting downtime on their manufacturing line. RFID also allows manufacturers to know exactly how many goods are in the production cycle—and where they are in that cycle—so they can better control their inventory of finished products. And the motivation for many manufacturers to opt for RFID WIP systems is to ensure quality control; by tracking parts through the assembly process, they have a record of each part added and can make sure each step was carried out correctly.
